 Overview:

This course provides an introduction to technology in education. You will  gain experience using existing and emerging technology and develop strategies for applying your learning to the classroom.  You will have the opportunity to develop the skills required to use productivity software, use the major on-line research tools available, and create instructional materials using computer software. Cooperative and accelerated learning techniques will be incorporated in this learning experience.

The amount of information that can be covered in this course is just a small portion of what every new teacher should learn. Therefore, the primary goals of this course are:

              a.     To instill a desire to learn about the use of

                        technology in the classroom.

              b.     To understand how computers can and are

                        being utilized in schools today.

c.              To understand how computers and networking

can enrich education in the future.

In order to begin achieving these goals, some basic knowledge is required. For some of you, this might be your first contact with

computers and related technolgies. For others, computers are an everyday tool. Because of its lmited time, this course cannot begin to teach everything you need to know, therfore a limited number of skills will be taught directly, while others will be briefly discussed.

The work assignments will be 40% of your grade.

There will be eight 8 research assignments. One research assignment for each of the chapters.  The research assignments will be 20% of your grade.

Student Success:

Each student is asked to be online  regularly and participate in class by asking questions, offering information, and  communicating   with the instructor and  fellow students. Please save all exams, projects etc. until final grades are received.  It is important to budget time wisely and provide adequate preparation for each quiz and project.  It is important also to talk with the instructor if you are having any concerns. Do this early to avoid the problem getting larger or unfixable.

Online Assessment Instructions and Guidelines

For general information about Blackboard Assessments, review the Student Manual found under the Tools button.

There are several types of questions that will  be asked on an online quiz (aka Assessment):

·        Multiple Choice: Allows the users a multitude of choices. In multiple-choice questions, users indicate the correct answer by selecting a radio button.

·        True/False: Allows the user to choose either true or false. True and False answer options are by default limited to the words True and False.

·        Multiple Answer: Multiple answer questions allow users to choose more than one answer.

Quizzes may be taken during the week it is open. You have one week to take your quiz – NO EXCUSES. Plan early and remember technology does not always work the way you think it should especially on the last night the quiz is open. Leave yourself time to have a plan “B”, if plan “A” is not working.

Quiz Problems and Solutions

Dial-up
If you dial in from home using an ISP such as AOL, the ISP may kick you off for inactivity. The problem is that when taking a quiz, you are simply viewing one web page, so it appears to the system that you are inactive. We do not recommend using the AOL browser. Use a browser installed on your hard drive instead (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape).

Resizing Erases Data
In Netscape, resizing the quiz window will cause all information entered by you up to that point to be erased. All answers will need to be reentered. For this reason, Netscape is not recommended to take quizzes.

Check your Browser Settings
If you are working at home on a dial-up connection, make sure your ISP time-out settings are set to the maximum allowed time.
To do this (on Windows) follow these instructions:

1. Click on Start, go up to settings, and click on Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Internet.
3. Click on the Connection tab near the top of the Internet window.
4. Under Dial-up settings, choose the service you use to connect to the Internet..
5. Click on the Settings button.
6. Click on the Advanced button near the bottom. You should see a check box on the window that appears which says:

Disconnect if idle for _____ minutes.

You can set this higher than its current value, but you should not uncheck the option.

How the Course Is Organized

Blackboard is an exceptionally full-featured online course delivery platform and does contain many advanced features and tools. This course is an introductory level course and will focus on the basics. The course is divided into four sections:

  1. Section 1 - Discussion assignments that require you to respond to a question posed by the instructor.  Usually 5-6 sentences in length. There will be eight of them.

  3. Section 3 - Work projects you will be working on in Word. Excel, PowerPoint, and FrontPage.
  4. Section 4 - Quizzes There will be Three quizzes from your textbook. Look at the quiz information to find out which book.

The instructor will be giving you a course CD with lots of valuable information to help you with work assignments 1 – 12. There are Power Points on what I am looking for and how to do it. There are samples of other students work on the CD.

The course discussions, research questions and quizzes will take place within the main Blackboard course.
