Welcome to Spring Term 2010 Interns

I know that you are anxious to begin your internship, so I’d like to establish the guidelines for the term.  The deliverables are:

Letter of Agreement

You may modify the sample letter of agreement in Microsoft Word format.  There are “form fields” (gray) in the document where you should make an entry or select from the list of choices provided.  After you have completed negotiating your internship, please create a letter of agreement as a contract between yourself and your supervisor.  After you and your supervisor sign it, please send me a copy of the signed letter of agreement.  You may fax a copy to my attention at (904) 646-2078, and provide the original to me for my files.  You may either hand-deliver the original to my office (South Campus, F-224) or mail it to me at the following address:

Letter Verifying Work Experience

If you have worked full-time in the computer field, you may be eligible to receive credit for your work experience.  Please submit a letter (on company letterhead) verifying your work experience.  Use a format similar to that of the Letter of Agreement, and describe the tasks performed in your position.  Also include the length of time that you have been in the position.  The letter should be submitted on company letterhead by your supervisor.  Please send me a copy of the signed letter (as above) to enroll in the class.  The letter will satisfy the requirements for the internship, so that you will not need to submit the status reports, evaluation, or final report.

Weekly Status Reports

We will be using Blackboard for communication and submission of status reports.  After I receive a copy of the letter of agreement, you may begin submitting weekly status reports documenting your internship.  Points toward your grade in the course will be earned by submitting weekly status reports on time.  In the sample spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel format, you should report your days, hours, and a description of your activities for the week.  Append the current week’s information to the end of the previous spreadsheet.  This will provide the cumulative (total) number of hours that you have worked toward your internship.  Please submit your status reports on Monday for the preceding week.  (The number of hours that you work each week may vary.  As an example, if you work more than the contracted number of hours per week, you may finish the requirements for the internship before the end of the term.Throughout the term, I will be contacting your employer to monitor your participation in the internship program.

Evaluations

At the mid-point of the term (when you complete half of your required hours), you should request an evaluation (for your file), as well as at the end of the term (for my file).

Summary Report

At the end of your internship, please submit a 2-3 page report describing your internship.  (You may describe any skills or experience that you like.  I would also like to know if you would recommend a similar internship to another student.)

Notes

If you would like additional information added to the site, please let me know.  If you have questions, please call or send an email.
